What Hypervigilance Actually Is
Hypervigilance is a state of heightened sensory and cognitive alertness, in which the nervous system remains primed to detect threat even in the absence of any actual danger. It is not a choice, and it is not simply a habit of being attentive. It is the physiological output of a nervous system that has learned, through real past experience, that staying alert was necessary for safety.
The defining feature is the mismatch between the level of alertness and the actual level of risk. A genuinely dangerous environment warrants vigilance; that vigilance is adaptive and appropriate to the threat. Hypervigilance persists after the danger has passed, applying the same alertness to environments that are now, by any objective measure, safe.
Why It Develops
Hypervigilance commonly develops in response to unpredictable environments: a household where a caregiver’s mood could shift without warning, a workplace defined by chronic instability, or any sustained period in which safety depended on early detection of danger signals. Why Telling Yourself to Relax Does Not Work
Hypervigilance is not a thought, and it cannot be argued out of position the way a thought can. Telling yourself, or being told, to simply relax addresses the conscious mind, which is rarely where the actual alertness originates.
